The World BBoy Classic originated in 2009 and it is unique 2on2 competition organised by the foundation ‘45Live.’
The concept: Invite 16 of the world’s best professional BBoys to the event, divide them randomly into 8 groups of two one hour before the start of the finals; the so-called ‘Great Eight’.
Earlier that same day eight duos from an open qualifier tournament get a chance to qualify for the World BBoy Classic Main Event, the so-called ‘Challengers’.
Pretty epic.
There so many of these videos to watch, but here are two that some other Ninjas and I found especially interesting:
I guess I’m going through a bad movie phase, and by bad I mean totally flippin awesome.
So I came across this one courtesy of a friend, but finding the movie in its entirety has proven quite difficult. Here is one man’s adventure to come across the movie that is “An American Hippie in Israel.” I found his blog after scouring the internet trying to find a place to buy this film. It’s some random myspace blog and it’s the most concise lead I’ve found and it explains well the dedication many people have put into trying to find this Hippie. In fact no one even knows who the original director or actors are. But just read this to find out the whole story:
“On The Trail Of ‘An American Hippie In Israel’
After stumbling across the “An American Hippie In Israel” trailer on YouTube earlier this year, it’s become kind of an obsession with me to try and find this never released, long lost, long forgotten 70s oddity.
It’s not listed on IMDB, type it into Google and the only thing you get back are people looking for it as well, there’s no solid information anywhere about this mystery film.
The trailer for it surfaced a few years back when it was featured on the DVD release of “I Drink Your Blood”, from the Grindhouse DVD label, featured in their Coming Soon trailer section of the bonus features. Just the title alone is enough to make you do a double take, but actually watching the trailer is a truly unique experience, one which I won’t even attempt to describe, simply watch it below.
Grindhouse announced they would be releasing The Hippie at some point in the future (along with the equally sort after “Gone With The Pope”), but ever since then everything’s gone quiet from them, infact they don’t seem to have released any DVDs for a couple of years, there doesn’t seem to even be a website for the label.
So the trail went cold for a while, but with all treasure hunts you mustn’t give up. So every once in a while I throw the title into Google and see what comes back.
Then one day there’s some news, a 35mm cinema print has turned up for sale on ebay, unfortunately I’ve missed the actual auction and I only find out about it from an online forum discussion about it.
The seller’s write up listed the print as being in pristine quality, looking as if it had never been projected, he’d played the print recently and said it look brand new. Just knowing that The Hippie had been projected and watched recently in the world made me feel so much better.
Now the print ended up going for just over $500 dollars, which is a good price for such a rare find, prints can go for way more.
Other people have been looking for this film so there was quite a lot of talk about this print, one person had emailed the seller and asked is he knew anything about the Grindhosue release. The seller replied and said that he’d recently been intouch with Grindhouse to ask if they wanted to by the print, they replied and said they had higher quality materials that they were working from for their release. Which is great news, but could really mean anything, they don’t seem to have released any DVDs for a couple of years, so I’ve no idea when, or if, the DVD will come out.
One interesting point is that the seller was asked one very important question on the auction page, which he replied to:
Q – Is the onscreen title “An American Hippie In Israel”?
A – Yes, that’s the onscreen title.
This really helps a lot, as one of the theories going around, as to why there was no information at all about this film, was the possibility that Grindhouse had re-titled it; hence why no one could find any details about the original version. That now seems to have been settled, though we still have no idea who the Hippie himself is played by, or who the director was, as nothing is listed on the trailer beyond the films title.
Now, I’m not totally sure about the next point, but it’s possible that the winner of the auction could be another DVD label, one of the people on the forum discussing the print said he though the winners name was that of a DVD-R label, though that’s unconfirmed. If that’s true then it would be very possible for them to put out a DVD made from the print, it might not look perfect, but it would still be a great watch.
I do like to think about what I would have done if I’d been able to buy the print, if I had enough money it would have been simple to win and then get it shipped over here. Then book a slot at Mr Youngs and have the UK premiere of The Hippie, 30 odd years after it was made, would have been a night to remember.
So that brings us up to date, there’s hope, a print surfaced, now someone else owns it, it’s possible they might put it out, plus we still have the possibility of the Grindhouse DVD release. That all brings me one small step closer to actually seeing this most obscure film.
Will it be any good? That’s not really the issue, it could be terrible, but I get the feeling it won’t be, the trailer just looks too entertaining, watch it for yourself and decide. ”
And here it is, “An American Hippie in Israel.” There’re boobies in the trailer!
I’ll try and find some more sweet movies for you Ninjas,
I was driving around today wishing I could find more Nujabes songs. Ever since he passed away this year I have been upset. I have had to look around for songs that I may have missed since he won’t be able to produce new ones anymore.
Somehow I managed to come across this song “With Rainy Eyes” and it’s amazing. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard it before. If you have a couple minutes sit back and let your mind wander with this tune:
This documentary is worth watching, it’s good to know what is happening with your old computers and cell phones. It’s only 20 minutes to watch it, and it is definitely important to understand the human and environmental concerns associated with this problem.
Here is a little bit from the video:
“On the outskirts of Ghana’s biggest city sits a smoldering wasteland, a slum carved into the banks of the Korle Lagoon, one of the most polluted bodies of water on earth. The locals call it Sodom and Gomorrah.
Correspondent Peter Klein and a group of graduate journalism students from the University of British Columbia have come here as part of a global investigation — to track a shadowy industry that’s causing big problems here and around the world.
Their guide is a 13-year-old boy named Alex. He shows them his home, a small room in a mass of shanty dwellings, and offers to take them across a dead river to a notorious area called Agbogbloshie.
Agbogbloshie has become one of the world’s digital dumping grounds, where the West’s electronic waste, or e-waste, piles up — hundreds of millions of tons of it each year.
The team meets with Mike Anane, a local journalist who has been writing about the boys at this e-waste dump.
“Life is really difficult; they eat here, surrounded by e-waste,” Anane tells them. “They basically are here to earn a living. But you can imagine the health implications.” ‘
Be a good Ninja and dispose of your old electronics only through reputable recycling services.
Sometimes the 80’s gets it right. In fact sometimes you find the most amazing cinema productions the world has ever seen; this is one of those times.
Welcome to “Hard Ticket to Hawaii”
Wet your appetite with this one:
Now you may have some questions like:
1. Why was the skater doing a handstand?
2. Why didn’t they just shoot the guys as they drove past?
3. Why did the bullet hit the tire and hit the person?
4. Why did reversing into the skater cause him to fly 50 trillion feet into the air?
5. Why the blow up doll?…
But don’t think about that. Focus instead on the amazing dialogue, or the numerous catch phrases:
1. “Man he must be smokin some heavy dubbies”
2. “Here’s the gun skater, blow em’ away”
3. “No problem baby”
4. “Let’s get that turkey”
Once you’re warmed up, try this scene on for size:
I’d quote this one too, but every single line is amazing.
Needless to say I’m going to make some shirts themed after this movie.
I don’t care if anyone buys them, I just want to make them.
Let me save you hours of scouring the internet to try and find it online. It’s no where for free! It’s not at Blockbuster. In fact I couldn’t even find it on Amazon or ebay when I looked for it. I had to get a Netflix account just for this movie. So worth it. You can get a 2 week free trial and then order it.
-if you do find it online somewhere leave it in the comments.
Been having a couple of busy weeks, but all in the name of The Neishon. Some fun opportunities are coming up for everyone; new products, new Online shop, new events, new everything. But what’s important to remember is that the new comes from the old and the old is the foundation. With that said, I’m happy that all of you have been there from the beginning to see NN grow from the ground up. So much more left to do, that’s for sure, but for reals, you playas keep the motivation there.
With that said, here’s a cool little movie that some of you might like. It’s about a journey from Mexico to the tip of South America- a little place called Patagonia. It’s been about 4 years since I was last on a similar journey to the South. I went by boat from Mexico to Chile and back up the west coast. It’s amazing how much something like that can change your perspective, or enhance your ambitions in life. I think that’s why I liked this film so much, but I’ll leave it up to you to interpret it how you like.
Patagonia has based their business on sustainability. Something I really admire.
Believe it or not, The Neishon is constantly trying to figure out ways to make this business more sustainable too. There’s a point in which you have to admit that by making anything you are adding to the clutter of the world. But that’s good to realize because it makes you put more care and attention into everything that you DO make because you know you should only be putting out quality products. And in the end, it’s my hopes that the community that will form around The Neishon will be more beneficial than harmful for the world.
